Aquaculture

Often referred to as “fish farming”, Aquaculture is broadly defined as the culture of any living aquatic resource. Fish, crustaceans, molluscs, plants, algae, and even useful bacteria, can be produced in aquaculture facilities. In North Carolina, we have a diverse industry that focus’ on the following species: Fish: Striped Bass (and hybrid striped bass), Tilapia, Catfish and Trout (NC is a top producer of trout); Crustaceans: crayfish and Blue Crabs; and Molluscs: oysters and clams.

These organisms may be raised in the more traditional “open systems” such as ponds and leased coastal waters, or in more “intensive systems” especially the indoor tank facilities referred to as “recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)”. Aquaculture is a complex and dynamic industry and North Carolina is part of this global powerhouse of seafood production. The materials contained in this website are intended to provide useful, research based, information with a focus to assist the development of the NC industry.
